What is inside
It is the middle of the night and you are doing arithmetic. If I fall asleep now, I still get most of a night. Then half of one. Then less.
If that scene is familiar, you have probably tried the usual list already: keep the room cool, put the phone away, no coffee after lunch. This book takes a different route. It works on the two places the list rarely reaches, which are the day that comes before the night, and the struggle that going to bed has turned into.
The thirty days are grouped in four weeks. Week One is for watching: you change nothing and simply look at how your nights actually go, on a one-page Sleep Map. Week Two is the day, which is where most of a night is decided: a steady hour to get up, morning light, an evening that comes down on purpose. Week Three is the night itself: a bed that means sleep and rest, a calm plan for waking at three in the morning, and a night with no clock in it. Week Four is the mind and real life, including a place for worry that is not your pillow, and a shorter version of the program for travel, deadlines and hard weeks.
After the thirty days there is a Sleep Toolkit of twenty-three short reference cards, a troubleshooting section and answers to the questions readers ask most.
How does it work?
Two short windows a day. Each morning, a brief insight and a practice that set up the night from the far end. Each evening, a short reflection and a practice that bring the day down and take the fight out of going to bed. A session takes five to ten minutes.
The method is psychology and behavioral science rather than a wisdom tradition, which is what separates The 30-Day Shift from Daily Wisdom Books. There is no writing space inside the book, so it is not a workbook you have to fill in to use it. Anything worth writing down fits in a notebook you already own, and the free starter kit covers the three pages that are easier printed.
What this book will not do
It cannot make you sleep, and it does not promise you a number of hours. Nothing can, and that is the first thing the book teaches rather than an apology at the back of it. It also never asks you to sleep less, to stay up when you are sleepy, or to get out of bed when you would rather lie there and rest.
What thirty days of steady practice can change is the ground your sleep stands on: when you get up, what your bed means, and what you do when a night goes badly. Some nights will still be hard. You will know what to do with them.
Is this a substitute for treatment?
No. This is a program of habits written by an author, not a clinician, and it is not a treatment for anything. The book includes a plain list of the signs that belong with a doctor rather than with a book, and if any of them describes you, that list is the part to read first.
Which book in the series should I start with?
Start here if the nights are the problem. Start with No Stress in 30 Days if the tension is a baseline that is simply always there, and with Stop Overthinking in 30 Days if the problem is the loop: replaying, rehearsing, unable to close a decision.
They connect, and three in the morning is where they meet. Each one stands alone, and any of them is a reasonable place to enter.
If that sounds like the year you want, it is one page a day starting whenever you open it.

Yes, a starter kit of three printable tools to use alongside the program: the Sleep Map for Week One, the Wind-Down Planner for the routine you settle on at Day 28, and the Chair Setup card for Week Three, which carries the list of signs that belong with a doctor on the back of it.
It is free, and it is yours whether or not you buy the book. You leave your email address on the page whose address is printed inside the book, and the kit downloads the moment you confirm it.
Try the first week of No Stress in 30 Days free
The free week is from No Stress in 30 Days, the first book in this series, not from Sleep Better in 30 Days. It is seven days, fourteen guided sessions, morning and evening: the real Week One, as it appears in that book.
You confirm your email address, and the whole week comes as one PDF to download. Signing up also adds you to the weekly letter, which you can leave at any time.
Start Sleep Better in 30 Days whenever you like. There is no day one.
